Paving 101
The Asphalt Paving Process
Asphalt paving is a complex process that requires precision and expertise. Here’s an overview of the typical steps involved:
- Site Preparation: The area to be paved is excavated appx 10-12″ using a Kubota KX080 Excavator
- Aggregate Base Installation: A layer of gravel base material is laid and compacted to create a solid foundation.
- Asphalt Mix Preparation: The asphalt mix is prepared in a hot mix plant, where the right proportions of aggregate, binder, and filler are combined.
- Paving: The hot asphalt mix is transported to the site and spread evenly over the prepared surface using a paving machine. Depending on the specs of the job one or two coats of asphalt may be installed.
- Compaction: The asphalt is compacted using a roller to ensure proper density and a smooth finish.
- Curing: The asphalt is left to cure and cool, which typically takes a few days.
- Striping and Marking: Where applicable, once the asphalt has cured, striping and marking are done to designate traffic lanes, parking spaces, etc.
*Excavation depths and gravel thickness can vary slightly depending on grades and soil conditions.
